FOOTBALL Whitchurch Utd 4, East Cowes Vics 0
A HORROR tackle on Vics’ new signing Ross Phelps, from Brading, overshadowed the result of this Sydenhams Wessex League, Division 1 match on Saturday.
As a result of the 78th minute incident, in which he suffered serious ankle ligament damage, two cracked ribs and a dislocated thumb, Phelps could potentially be out for the rest of the season.
It happened when the side were already 3-0 down, having conceded one inside 19 seconds of the start.
The referee had no hesitation in sending the player who committed the foul off as medics treated the centre back on the pitch for around half an hour.
After the event, Phelps’s teammates were not too bothered about the final result and Whitchurch went on to score another goal before the final whistle.
Allan Tyrell did not help Vics’ cause by coming off the subs bench only to be sent off himself, for two bookable offences.
Vics: East, Gifford, Phelps, Bast, Tigwell, Attrill, Holmes, McKie, Barnes, Harvey, C. Tyrell. Subs: A. Tyrell, Hayles.
East Cowes Vics 1, Hythe and Dibden 1
Injury matters went from bad to worse on Monday when their influential forward Casey Tyrell was stretchered off late in this match with a nasty-looking ankle injury.
Vics’ problem of not being able to hold onto a lead continued as Brian ATTRILL’S first-half header was cancelled out 15 minutes into the second half by a Hythe goal.
Allan Tyrell will no doubt be starting to gain a reputation, being sent off in this match as well for another two bookable offences.
