A COOL finish a minute from time was enough to seal victory for Newport in the Isle of Wight Senior (Gold) Cup final against in-form Cowes Sports last night (Friday).

A 400-strong crowd at East Cowes Vics watched an evenly matched and gritty encounter, with very few chances created by both sides.

Newport left it late, with striker Charlie SMEETON latching on to an excellent through ball and calmly rounding the keeper to slot into an empty net on 89 minutes.

Delighted Port skipper Darren Powell said: "It was never going to be pretty — it was a real battle. We left it late and came through in the end."
