NEWPORT earned three valuable points in the Sydenhams Wessex League Premier Division today (Saturday) with a 1-0 win at home to Alton Town.
A goal from Tom McInnes in the first half earned victory, although the game was marred by a knee injury to Sam Dye, who was taken to hospital for treatment.
Brading Town's recovery in the division faltered again, with a 5-2 home defeat against high-flying Bemerton Heath Harlequins.
They raced into a 3-0 lead in the match, before extending their advantage in the 31st minute. Brading pulled one back through new signing Phil McDonald, and made it 4-2 in the second half through Nathan Lewis. Bemerton had the final say, however, late in the game.
In Division 1, Cowes Sports went ahead twice at Ringwood Town but had to be content with a draw. Tom Dye and Dom Burbidge scored the goals.
East Cowes Vics came away from their home match against AFC Portchester with nothing. They were 1-1 at the halfway point, with a goal from Joe Adams. But Portchester pulled away in the second half and matters were made worse when goalkeeper Jordan Brownrigg was forced off the field with an injury.
With no substitute goalkeeper, Freddie Knowles had to go between the posts, and he let in two more as Portchester won 5-1.
