FOOTBALL TWENTY games across Hampshire Cup competitions and the Harwoods Vauxhall IW Saturday League fell foul of bad weather last weekend, with heavy rain waterlogging pitches.
But there was still plenty of drama to be had in the games that were played.
In the second round of the Hampshire Intermediate Cup, a tantalising all-IW tie between Oakfield and Cowes Sports Reserves ended with seven goals scored in boggy conditions.
The match also signalled the return to action of Championship referee and Islander James Linington (see adjacent story).
The clash was locked at 2-2 with 20 minutes left, but in the end, Oakfield won 5-2, goals scored by Scott Saunders, two, Phil McDonald, Sam Hart and Liam Smith. For Cowes, Robbie Taylor and Craig Holmes were on target.
Also progressing to the next round were Brading Town, who travelled to US Portsmouth Reserves and won 5-1. Dan Vale scored four, and Cayman Collins, who had set up several of Vale’s goals, netted the fifth.
Northwood defeated University of Portsmouth Community 3-1 with goals from Alex Harvey, two, and Jason Malcolmson.
Exiting were Pan Sports, who lost 5-0 at Hedge End Rangers and East Cowes Vics Reserves, who were knocked out in extra time by Infinity, 5-4.
Scoring for Vics were Nathan Barlow, two, Jack Thompson and Kenny Jenkins.
In the second round of the Hampshire Junior A Cup, Carisbrooke went through after a 3-1 win over Wey Valley, Harley Turner, two, and Mike Lewin scoring, while Yarmouth and Calbourne also progressed after a 4-0 win at Sutton Scotney. Kyle Gulliver, two, Nathan Taylor and Russell Ince all scored.
However, five teams went out. Binstead COB Reserves forfeited their game at Compton, while Simon Merritt’s goal was not enough for West Wight Reserves, who lost 4-1 at Hook.
Sandown Reserves (Nathan McCarthy) were beaten 3-1 at Sherfield, while goals from Daniel Storey and Ozzy Little were not enough for Osborne Coburg Reserves who lost 3-2 to Headley United Reserves.
Tadley Calleva A beat Northwood Reserves 5-3, with Dan Silk, Matt Bates and John Mather scoring for Northwood.
There was another all-IW tie in the second round of the Hampshire Junior B Cup, with Shanklin A beating AFC Wootton 2-0, with goals from Dean White and Dean Austin.
Holmwood Athletic were knocked out by Headley, who won 5-3.
Only four games were played in the Harwoods Vauxhall IW Saturday League.
In Division 1, Shanklin (John Woodward, pen, and Max Sampson) defeated Niton 2-0, while the same score was enjoyed by Wroxall against Ryde Saints A in Division 3. An own goal and a strike from Lee Simpkins sealed the points.
In Combination 1, Ryde Saints beat Oakfield (Dareyl Garrett) 4-1, with goals from Cameron Smith, two, Kane Salmon and Chad Cracknell.
In Combination 2, Brighstone beat AFC Bournemouth 5-2, with goals from Adam Jones, Owen Taylor, Tom McLoughlin, Rich Wilson and Ben Athey.
