LADIES' FOOTBALL
FOR the second week running, the Island’s ladies footballers lost on penalties in a cup final.
A fortnight ago Shanklin Ladies lost to Oxford Ladies on penalties in the League Cup final and on Sunday, virtually the same players, this time representing the Island in the Appleby Tournament against the Isle of Man, suffered the same heartache.
The final of the annual triangular tournament, held at Brading’s Peter Henry Ground, ended 1-1, after Kim Masterton’s second-half strike was cancelled out.
The visitors changed their goalkeeper just minutes before the shoot-out but after four kicks each, the Island had it in their hands.
IW goalkeeper, Josie Tyler, only had to score to give the Island a 5-4 shoot-out win but the Isle of Man’s substitute stopper saved with her feet.
Both sides each missed a penalty in sudden death, before the Isle of Man scored the crucial kick to win 6-5.
A deflated IW coach, Mark Woodhouse, said the better team lost. "It has been the story of our season," he said. "We were the better team, we hit the bar twice and we played well but it was not meant to be."
On Friday night, the Island booked their place in the final by beating Jersey 6-0.
Masterton netted a hat-trick, alongside strikes from Susan Cullen, Kim Arnold and Nicola Briggs.
The Isle of Man reached the final after beating Jersey 2-0 on Saturday.
