FOOTBALLBrading Town 0, Newport 4
THERE is a saying which could sum up Newport’s season perfectly — "it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish".
And judging by the last two results for Steve Brougham’s men, including this emphatic derby victory at the Peter Henry Ground on Monday, there could be plenty for Newport fans to smile about.
Despite the best efforts of the Brading players, Newport were visibly buoyed from their victory at Laverstock, and played with purpose and style.
Harry Ovnik, booked early on for a crunching tackle on Kieran Ford, led a staunch central defence and for the rest of the game put in some fantastic challenges, while the attacking line of GC Giancovich, Kyle Levrier and Tom McInnes passed the ball between them beautifully.
Brading, on the other hand, struggled to put their attacks together and Newport goalkeeper Gary Streeter had little to do.
Newport took the lead in the 23rd minute, when a speculative shot from James BUTT flew in from 25 yards out.
Around 15 minutes later and Newport doubled their advantage, when a free kick floated in by Butt was flicked on by Levrier and MCINNES headed in from close quarters.
Brading came out for the second half with more purpose and Phil McDonald forced a brilliant fingertip save from Streeter five minutes from the restart. But they were unable to find that killer finish and Newport punished this with half an hour left when, after a good run from Giancovich down the left, he crossed to LEVRIER, whose soft shot crept past Gareth True, who had already committed himself in the other direction.
After a series of substitutions from both sides, the game picked up pace once again and Iain Seabrook should have made it 4-0 when he had a clear view of goal, but his blistering shot rebounded out.
A minute later though, Giancovich turned creator again, providing an unselfish ball to MCINNES, who netted his second.
Brading continued to try and pull back a consolation but Newport held out to maintain 12th in the table.
