FOOTBALL Newport 8, Fawley 2
THERE was a scoring spree at St George’s Park on Tuesday night, as Newport romped to victory against Fawley.
They took the lead in the 11th minute when after a goalmouth scramble, Darren POWELL stabbed the ball home from close range.
Eight minutes later it was 2-0, as Tom MCINNES took advantage of confusion between Fawley goalkeeper Darren Winter and a defender to win the ball walk it into the net.
Scott JONES scored the third on 30 minutes, after Charlie Smeeton played the ball across the goalmouth for him to blast it into the top of the net on the far post.
Fawley pulled a goal back on 35 minutes when Gary Streeter was unable to hold onto a shot and Joe Wood tapped in the rebound.
In the second half, the goals just kept on coming, Newport taking all the chances handed to them.
A poor back pass let Newport in for their fourth goal, Charlie SMEETON taking advantage to slot home from an acute angle, and he netted his second and Newport’s fifth on the hour mark. And then, a minute later, SMEETON completed his hat-trick when Freddie Knowles slipped the ball through and he guided the ball home from close range.
Fawley netted a second goal but their small comeback was cut abruptly short when MCINNES scored two goals in the space of a minute to complete his hat-trick, and Newport’s rout.
The win puts Newport second in the Sydenhams Wessex League Premier Division.
