Roman revival goes on

FOOTBALLTotton and Eling 1, Brading Town 1

BRADING gained a well-earned point on Saturday to keep their Sydenhams Wessex League Premier Division revival going.

After a quiet start, with few chances for either side, the first chance fell to Brading midway through, when Jake Younie’s shot from the tightest of angles was blocked at the near post by the Totton keeper. Shortly afterwards, Brading had another chance when Cayman Collins was set up in the penalty area, only for his shot to be deflected wide.

They eventually made the breakthrough eight minutes before the break, when after a James Butt free kick, Ollie FLEMING was the first to react, getting a foot in to deflect the ball into the net.

The goal seemed to spark the home side into life as they poured forward looking for a quick response and it came five minutes later in unfortunate circumstances.

A dangerous cross was whipped into the box from the right and Fleming, looking to clear the danger with his head, could only divert the ball into his own net.

With the wind behind them in the second half, Totton came out flying and a superb point-blank save from Gareth True kept the scores level.

True was in inspired form as he kept out a couple of long-range efforts soon after, while at the other end, Brading managed to create a couple of good chances of their own, with Fleming denied by a good block from Totton’s goalkeeper and Younie, whose header was well saved.

With time running out the visitors were once again indebted to fine save from True when he pushed away a header low down at his post, before Totton let a golden chance slip away when one of their players, in acres of space, somehow shot wide.

Brading: True, Butt, Lewis, Fleming, Rann, Younie, Ford, Wilson, Browne, Collins, Lawson. Subs: Ranson, Brown, Hull.
