NEWPORT beat the odds to defeat Downton tonight (Wednesday) in the Sydenhams Wessex League Premier Division.
After Aleks Przespolewski was sent off for a second bookable offence on the hour, and Downton pressing, the writing looked as if it was on the wall. But after a surging run from John McKie which ended in a foul and penalty claim, a free kick was given just outside the box - and GC Giancovich scored the winner.
The win means Newport rise to seventh, and Downton are denied a chance to top the division.
