THE powerhouses of Harwoods Vauxhall IW Saturday League, division 1 — West Wight and Brading Town — continued their unbeaten form last weekend.
West Wight defeated Ventnor with a Chris Griffiths hat-trick and two from Danny Ross, while the Romans had a tougher time before overcoming Ryde Saints 5-3.
Ben Armstrong, two, Josh Younie, Dan Vale and Roger Roper scored for Brading, while for Ryde Saints, Des Murphy jnr, Sam Woodmore and Tom Dunnett scored. The sides lying third and fourth respectively, Cowes Sports Reserves and Northwood, cancelled each other out in a goalless draw.
GKN came close to getting their first point of the season, but ultimately lost 3-2 to Shanklin. Lee Cotton and Gary Richardson netted for GKN.
On any normal day, five goals would see a victory but for Osborne Coburg that wasn’t the case as they lost 8-5 to Niton. For Coburg, Adam Cantelo netted a hat-trick, Carl Phillipson scored and an own goal completed their tally on a game which was definitely not for defences.
For Niton, Charlie Urry scored three, Callum Trueman scored two, Brian McGuire, Dave Sampson and Darren Plenty netted one each.
The points were shared between Pan and Oakfield in a 3-3 draw, Sam Hart, two, and Phil McDonald scoring for Oakfield, and Mark Taylor, Jamie Gulliver and Danny Wendes netting for the hosts.
In Division 2, Sam Read and Toby Eaglen scored in Shanklin VYCC’s 2-0 win over Binstead COB, while Chris McClatchie and Dean Pike netted as Brighstone beat W and B by the same score.
Harley Turner bagged a hat-trick in Carisbrooke’s 3-0 win over Seaview, while Luke Lambert, Nathan Taylor, Dean Heather and an own goal helped Yarmouth and Calbourne to a 4-1 win over Sandown (Chris Fletcher).
In a one-sided contest, top side Vectis Nomads beat bottom side Newchurch (Lee Illman) 6-1, with goals from Joe Borrer, Michael Bell, Ben Hayles, Nick Anstey, Chris Gunningham and Chris Reeves.
Ryde Saints A were always up against it in their Division 3 match with Newport A after losing two key defenders to injury. But they put in a good performance and the 8-4 scoreline in Newport’s favour was a shame. Scoring for Saints were Ryan Anker, two, James Tilbury and 16 year old Joseph Medway.
Goals from Dave Pritty and Kai Westmore were not enough as Kyngs Towne lost 3-2 to Holmwood Athetic, while Wight Cherries — now known as AFC Bournemouth — enjoyed a 7-1 win over Seaclose, with goals from Ryan Phillips, two, Patrick Wilson, Charlie Southcott, Josh Piper, Declan Leech and an own goal.
Rookley’s great start to the season continued with a thrilling 3-2 win over Wroxall (Carl Mooney and Kevin Netley). Goals from Alex Wright (pen), Jody Wright and Ray Richardson sealed the win.
In combination 1, Brading Town Reserves beat Sandown (Ben Burfitt) 4-1 with goals from Alex Boirand, two, Aaron Burford and Sam Sayers, while Paul Forster’s scrambled goal helped Northwood to a 1-0 win over West Wight.
Brothers Graham and Ben Gearing, and Nick Barnes, all scored as GKN beat Shanklin VYCC 3-0, while Osborne Coburg edged Ryde Saints Reserves 3-2, with goals from Levi Parkman, Josh Baker and Andy Preston. For Saints, Damien Martin and Gareth Lemon were on target.
Vectis Nomads came from a goal down at Seaview to win their Combination 2 match 8-1, despite a great performance from the Seaview goalkeeper.
Goals came from Sean Lindsay, two, Dan Betts, Aled Harris, Dave Chiverton, Ian Broadsmith and player-manager Drew Leggett.
Ten goals were scored in the draw between St Helens and Newchurch. For Newchurch, Lee Gregory, two, Grant Watt, Alex Adamou and Max Cowley scored.
The points were also shared between Yarmouth and Calbourne (Jordan Flynn) and Cowes Sports A (Jack Broomfield), Wight Cherries (Tom Riordan, two) and AFC Wootton (Dan Monaghan and Joe Hodgson), and Kyngs Towne (Ollie Fletcher, two) and Niton (G. Dugard and Robert Gee).
Carisbrooke moved up to third after a 2-1 win over Brighstone.
Christopher Higgins and Sam Hatcher scored for Carisbrooke, with Brighstone’s Tom Mc-Loughlin netting on his debut.
There were two matches in the first round of the Hampshire Junior B Cup. Shanklin A progressed after Stoneham failed to raise a side, while AFC Wootton progressed after a 6-2 win over Boldre Royal. Steve Rayner, two, Dan Busbridge, Shaun Howe, Ross Carter and Ben Self scored.
