Blues still top despite defeat
Ware 3 Wingate and Finchley 2
Wingate and Finchley's storming start to the season, which saw them win their first six games and head the Ryman League's Third Division table, seems but a distant memory as they slipped to their third defeat in four league and cup matches on Saturday.
Had it not been for some prolific shooting from Ware, Wingate would have returned home with a well-deserved point and despite the defeat they remain top as Clapton were also beaten.
Tony Gold, still seeking his first goal for the visitors, went agonisingly close with a chip that sailed over the bar, and then muffed an easier chance to open the scoring.
Keeper Michael Kalli was finally beaten a minute into the second period and conceded twice more before the 56th minute.
However, Wingate rallied with two goals from winger Richard Baum, his first goals for the club, but couldn't force home a third to salvage a point.
WINGATE AND FINCHLEY: Kalli, Brill, Piler, Grenstreet, Fisk, Fenton (Rayner 57min), Hart, Gold (Hinchliffe), Becker (Jessack), Myers, Baum.
