ANGRY cabbies sounded their horns and flashed their lights as they brought traffic in Newport to a slow crawl this morning (Tuesday) in a row over fares.

Drivers are calling on the IW Council, as the licensing authority, to review their fare structure, given the huge rise in fuel costs.

Around a dozen taxis left the Coppins Bridge car park at 11am, and made two laps of the town centre, travelling along South Street, St James’s Square and down the High Street, past County Hall.

The council said it reviewed taxi fares recently, when taxi proprietors were invited to send in their views.

Stuart Love, director of environment and neighbourhoods, said: “The methodology used to calculate the current fare increase included, among other issues, an estimated cost of petrol at £1.15 per litre. The current cost is only marginally in excess of this figure.”
