PRINCE Edward had a full diary for his visit to the Island on Wednesday.
Engagements included Brading Roman Villa and the Minster Church of Sts Thomas, the Isle of Wight County Press, the Riverside Centre and the Apollo Theatre in Newport.
Arriving by helicopter at the villa, the Earl of Wessex viewed the Big Dig site and was briefed on its progress.
The prince, patron of Brading Roman Villa, was then taken by car to Newport’s Minster Church to view the progress of its restoration project and meet the contractors on both of its phases. The prince is also patron of the church’s restoration appeal.
Tours of the County Press offices and the Riverside Centre, where he was due to meet representatives of the carnival workshop, were also scheduled, before a visit to the Apollo Theatre, where he was entertained by a short radio play entitled Hang Up, written by the late Island film director, Anthony Minghella.
Later in the evening, the prince returned to the church to attend a special service marking its inauguration and the blessing of new choir stalls and the restored and renewed fabric of the building, before being driven to Seaclose and his helicopter for the flight back to Bagshot Park, Surrey.
