New garden open to public

GARDENINGPELHAM House, in Seven Sisters Road at St Lawrence, is new to the National Gardens Scheme fold, and opens on Sunday.

It runs to an acre, tucked away in the heart of the Undercliff, with stunning sea views and private access into Pelham Woods.

Sloping lawns lead to a tropical Nippa hut from the Philippines, surrounded by exotic plants and tree ferns, which is quite a feature.

The opening will raise funds for National Garden Scheme charities and the sale of homemade teas will aid the village hall. Admission is £3, with children free, from 11am to 5pm.

The NGS said its new addition to the calendar this year — ten Niton gardens opening to the public — was a great success.

Charity funds already raised this year were substantially boosted by the Niton gardens’ opening and Jennie Fradgley (01983 730805) is keen to add more.

"It may seem early to be thinking about next year already but we have to finalise our programme in the next few weeks," she said.
