Drinking buddies Jim Prendevill and Pete Ludgate explain why they love the odd evening at The Red Cow in Wooburn Green

How long have you been drinking here?

Jim: For about 32 years. I started coming in here because it was my local and my father used to drink here. I used to stand in the back garden with my packet of crisps.

Pete: It's about 23 years now. I always used to knock around Wooburn and it ended up being my local. It was the first pub I had a drink in and I just kept coming in. It's the only pub I've ever stuck to.

What makes The Red Cow so good?

Jim: Well, it's a good atmosphere and you get a mixture of people all together in one place. Young and old, builders and managing directors all getting together to have a drink. Also Clive Smith. He is the main character among all the regulars.

Pete: Yes, Clive Smith is a legend in his own mind. Plus this is the only pub round The Green that does have a mix of people. In the Red Lion you have all the youngsters and the Queen and Albert tends to get the older drinkers. Even 20 years ago you got a good mixed crowd in here.

What is your usual drink and how often do you come?

Jim: IPA Green King bitter. Practically every night.

Pete: Lager. All weekend and early doors after work.

What has been your most memorable moment in the pub?

Jim: Probably my 50th birthday which was in October. So many people turned up and you couldn't move in this place.

Pete: My most memorable evening in here was the day my daughter was born, three years ago. I had a very good night in here and she [his wife who is also the barmaid at the Red Cow] was in hospital. I had just put in this bar which I designed and built for the pub and we well and truly christened the new bar I'd built here.

HISTORY:

The Red Cow is one of the oldest public houses in Wooburn Green. It serves "excellent food at lunch and Sunday Roast" according to Jim and Pete.
