It is only a short distance from Hampton's Beveree Ground in Beaver Close off Station Road to the fictional residence of Tony Hancock at Railway Cuttings, Cheam, but the two are linked by one of the Beavers' greatest supporters, Alan Simpson.

Together with partner Ray Galton, Simpson formed the famed comedy writing team responsible for Steptoe & Son and Hancock's Half Hour and some might say his favourite football team have provided quite a source of material over the years.

Last season Hampton won promotion to the Premier Division for the first time in their history, pipping Maidenhead to third place by one point, the same margin by which Walton has denied the Beavers a year before.

They had an excellent start to the campaign, defeating bookies favourites Hendon 3-1 but have only added one further point to that total since in Tuesday's 0-0 draw with Dulwich. Wood's last league visit to Beveree was in October 1989 when Alan Hunter's only goal gave them the points and they hope to have Kerry Dixon back from injury for Saturday although Shaun Marshall will almost certainly be missing. Kick off is at 3pm.

Next Tuesday evening Wood have an attractive home tie in the Ryman League Cup as they entertain Enfield, kick off 7.30pm. Wood have had the upper hand in recent meetings with the Es and also have an impressive past League Cup record to preserve reaching the semi-final last term after winning the trophy 12 months earlier.
