A huge spinnaker bearing the London 2012 logo was flown from the 32ft Paddiywack yacht, as it passed famous Island landmark The Needles.
On board the Island Youth Water Activities Centre 32ft yacht was a young crew primed to hoist the spinnaker at 3.30pm as the Island’s handover flag.
Every local authority in the country was invited to hoist a handover flag to celebrate the moment Britain became the next Olympic host.
Back at Cowes, the crew were greeted by the Isle of Wight Council’s chairman, Cllr Arthur Taylor, leader Cllr David Pugh and young people hoping to represent the Island at the Island Games to be held on the Isle of Wight in 2011.
The handover flag was then hoisted as a symbol of inspiration to young sportsmen and women across the Island who hope to become the Olympians of the future.
