ISLE OF WIGHT Ladies hockey team were in full celebratory mode last weekend as they marked their Hampshire Division 3 title with a double-figures win over depleted Southampton.
The side had secured promotion from the league in early February thanks to their incredible form, but sealed the title at Romsey with a 2-0 win, which put them 11 points clear of second-placed Haselmere, who only have three games to play.
So, with the title in the bag, IW went to town at Smallbrook, sweeping aside the challenge of Southampton, who arrived with the minimum eight players.
They opened their account with two quick goals, Harriet Martin converting a penalty shot and Carolyn McClellan netting from open play.
In the warm sunshine the IW were permanently camped inside the Southampton half, the visitors unable to get out and IW goalkeeper Lindsay Martin left with nothing to do.
It took until the 22nd minute for them to make it 3-0, Jaimie Unsworth’s long-range shot somehow bobbling underneath the Southampton keeper. Three more goals followed before the half time whistle, two from Leeya Roovis and one from Kate Ednay.
In the second half it was more of the same, with goals coming at regular intervals. Ednay completed her hat-trick with two more goals and she was supported with strikes from Lyn Horwell, two, Liz Williams and Harriet Martin.
Captain Unsworth said: "I can’t believe how well the squad have performed this season. Everything has just clicked into place and we’ve played some great hockey. It is so nice to have the juniors at the centre of our success too. I am extremely proud."
