HOCKEYPortsmouth and Southsea II 2, IW II 4
IW II secured a vital victory against fellow strugglers Portsmouth and Southsea to move out of the relegation zone at the home side's expense.
In a classic six-pointer, the Island knew anything less than three points would have spelled relegation. But instead the side have moved away from danger and now lie tenth in the league.
The home side started very well with IW II absorbing the pressure before taking the lead, through Reece Finney.
Sam Brown then put the IW two goals up before Portsmouth pulled a goal back, from a short corner.
In the second half, an early goal for the IW was crucial and they got their wish when they were awarded a penalty shot, which Richard Reynolds scored.
Portsmouth desperately tried to get back into the game but the win was secured after a goal for Rob Forrest made it 4-1.
Though the hosts pulled a goal back, again from a short corner routine, they never threatened the IW lead.
Tomorrow (Saturday), the side face Blandford at Smallbrook Stadium, with a 1.30pm start.
