IW 8, Wimborne Wayfarers 3

IW MAINTAINED their hold on top spot in Hampshire 4 with an impressive win over third-placed Wimborne at Smallbrook on Saturday.

The hosts took time to get going, but held the bulk of possession even if their finishing let them down. They got the breakthrough in the 12th minute, when Tom Young netted with a close-range backhand shot.

It took almost 15 minutes for them to double their advantage, with a copycat goal and a copycat scorer.

In the second half, Wimborne began brightly, pressurising Tom Butt in the IW goal and eventually getting a goal for their troubles.

This only served to wake up the IW and it triggered a flurry of goals, Young completing his hat-trick, Stephen Woodford and Tom Gould both scoring and James Liddiard getting in on the act.

Young and Woodford both netted to complete the IW scoring, and although Wimborne pulled two goals back, it was IW’s day.

IW: T. Butt, P. Butt, Hepburn, Allen, Simmonds, Stubbings, Liddiard, Gould, Young, Woodford, Butler, Heaven-Gandy.
