IW MOVED to the top of Hampshire 5 with a narrow win over promotion hopefuls Basingstoke at Smallbrook last weekend.
Again employing a new-look formation and system of play, and encouraged by coach Paul Jennings from the dugout, IW found a resilient Basingstoke tough to break down.
The visitors seldom threatened the Island, but when they did keeper Tom Butt easily dealt with any shots.
The Basingstoke keeper was playing well, denying Craig Bruce and Colin Simmonds with two good saves as it looked like being a frustrating afternoon for the home side.
With half time approaching, IW got the breakthrough their play deserved when Simon Butler’s shot from a penalty corner hit the keeper and flew into the net.
The second half was similar to the first, with IW leading in terms of possession but finding Basingstoke difficult to break down, and the home team would rarely test the keeper.
The visitors too were frustrated trying to garner serious chances, with the Island’s defence again playing well and marshalling any attacks well.
Despite not adding to their lead, IW held out to secure three hard earned points.
