Outstanding first half seals win

HOCKEYIW 3, Trojans 2

A SENSATIONAL display of passing hockey in the first half was enough for the IW to claim another scalp in Hampshire’s top division of hockey.

From the whistle, the new formation caused problems for Trojans. Arran Wood and Tim Gordon led from the midfield, with skipper Stu Allen covering every inch of the pitch.

Neat work from Tony Howsam on the right won a penalty corner which Andy Graham dispatched the rebound from Tom Young’s powerful drive.

Moments later, Howsam beat his man and made it 2-0. Their movement and work rate continued at pace and they were rewarded with a penalty flick, which Young was unlucky not to convert, striking the post.

He made amends shortly afterwards though after a short corner routine.

Trojans made a comeback in the second half scoring twice to make for a tense finish. However, IW goalkeeper Craig Bruce was in brilliant form and did enough to keep Trojans from equalising.

This weekend, the Island travel to Hamble in search of more points in order to stay out of the relegation fight.

IW: Bruce, Heaven-Gandy, Butt, Allen, Gordon, Wood, Howsam, Simmonds, Woodford, Young, Graham, Liddiard.
