Waterside 1, IW Ladies 2
IW LADIES secured promotion from Hampshire Division 3, with a hard-fought win over rivals Waterside last week.
It was the team’s 13th consecutive win, but unlike many of their past victories, this one was not an easy one — Waterside challenging IW’s style of play throughout.
As the game progressed, IW’s neat passing and switching of the ball opened up chances for the forwards and the breakthrough came when Lauren Morton powered her way past the Waterside defence to score.
They thought they had doubled their lead in the second half when Georgia Whittle’s deflection found the back of the net after a short corner, but it was disallowed due to an earlier infringement.
Waterside were given a lifeline when IW had a player sent off, and they piled the pressure on goalkeeper Helen Hunnybun.
And then, against the, run of play, Kate Ednay made it 2-0 after a brilliant clearance pass from Leeya Roovis.
Although Waterside had the final say with a strike in to the bottom corner, IW held on for the win and promotion, with five games still to play.
