Newbury and Thatcham Mixed 1, IW Mixed 2

THE IW Mixed team made their competitive debut for the season and stunned higher league opposition in the first round of the National Mixed Cup on Sunday.

The side quickly settled into a nice rhythm of flowing hockey, with the defensive unit of Stuart Allen, Ollie Stubbings, Jaimie Unsworth and Helen Hunnybun solid at the back.

The first goal came when Colin Simmons slotted the ball through to Tom Young, who placed it into the bottom left corner. Newbury applied a lot of pressure after this, but Lewis Heaven-Gandy, Carolyn McClellan, Hannah Seaman and Nicky Richardson soaked up the pressure and distributed the ball well, leaving the opponents having to readjust their formation.

The Island’s second goal came when Young found the well-positioned Kate Ednay to score.

Newbury’s goal came after a period of sustained pressure which resulted in a penalty corner. Their first strike was parried off the line by Heaven-Gandy but they netted on the rebound.

IW held on in a very tense final five minutes.

IW: Unsworth, Ednay, Seaman, Hunnybun, Heaven-Gandy, Martin, McClellan, Richardson, Allen, Butt, Liddiard, Simmons, Young, Stubbings.
