HOCKEYPetersfield 2, IW 7
WITH promotion already secured, IW went one better last week and clinched the overall Hampshire 6 title with three games still left to play.
A devastating 15-minute spell in the second half sealed the deal for IW, who were always in control.
The hosts boasted two very skilful players and started well, denied the lead early on thanks to a stunning sliding block from James Liddiard.
Petersfield again should have gone in front from another attack soon after but a forward somehow put his shot wide with the goal gaping.
This miss proved costly, as IW began to take control and then took the lead when Colin Simmonds followed up his initial shot to slot home.
The doubled their advantage when the in-form Barry Lloyd picked up his first of the game from the top of the area.
In the second half, Petersfield kept up with the visitors until IW went on the rampage.
Firstly, Rob Forrest beat several challenges to slot home just three minutes after the restart, before Lloyd grabbed his brace seconds later from a tight angle.
Forrest then further extended IW’s lead when his shot was deflected in by a Petersfield defender and then, after excellent build-up play by youngster Jack Nicolau, Simmonds made it 5-0.
Liddiard rounded off the scoring by sweeping home a cross from Stuart Allen, who ran the length of the pitch to set up the chance.
In the final moments, Petersfield took advantage of a sloppy five minutes to score twice but it did little to dent the IW celebrations.
Tomorrow (Saturday), IW host their one-time title rivals, Salisbury III, with official celebrations afterwards. The game starts at 1pm.
