HOLLYWOOD Boulevard came to Sandown Esplanade yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon when Marilyn Monroe, Shirley Temple and James Bond took to the streets for the annual children’s carnival.

Consisting of cousins, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which also featured Johnny Depp, Bart Simpson, Buzz Lightyear and a baby Elvis Presley, in the form of George Fletcher, were crowned best group.

Representing the family group from Shanklin, Sandown and Lake, Fiona O’Regan said: “The children all love films and they did research on the internet to find out more about the stars they wanted to be.

“It was a great way of recycling some costumes they already had and the stars and banner were made from recycled plywood.”

The traditional parade from Sandham Grounds took place in sunny but windy conditions. It was led by Sandown town cryer John Davies, with the Egyptian-themed Sandown Carnival Queens’ Float, Queens of the Nile, following closely behind.

The marching beat was provided by Green Mount Samba Band with some groups, including the Hawaiian Beach Party, from Noah’s Ark toddler group, at Sandown Baptist Church, providing their own themed music for the parade.

Dressed as a glow worm, Logan Haywood, took part in the parade in the best handcart, The Bee, which was created by grandmother Ruth Moody, of Newport Road, Lake, with help from Logan’s sister Baylee Haywood, who took part as a butterfly, and cousin Krystal Joy, as a dragonfly.

Mrs Moody said: “I’ve been doing the carnival for the last 22 years since my children were young and we’ve won quite a few times.

“Each year I start with material I’ve already got and work from that.”
