ICE HOCKEY WIGHTLINK Raiders legend Steve Gannaway has been re-signed for the new season — and made assistant coach.

Gannaway, who has been a member of the Raiders’ squad for all but one of its 18-year existence, and is known to all as Ganners, was signed this week.

He will start the season on the bench as assistant coach to player-coach Jeremy Cornish, and will play in his famous number 3 shirt as and when his fitness allows.

Cornish said: "Steve has been my unofficial assistant since I took over as coach four seasons ago and a lot of our recent success has been down to him and his knowledge about the league and the players.

"He will train with us and if he feels he is ready to compete in game action again, he will be welcomed back. I know Steve is very passionate about the club and I think retaining his services was an absolute must."

The Raiders squad for the new season is now complete, with youngsters Aidan Doughty and Luke Tull also set to play up with the senior team when available.

The season starts on September 2 with a trip to Solent and Gosport, with their first home game on September 8, when they host Invicta Dynamos.
