Wightlink Raiders 10, Cardiff Devils 2
A SLICK Wightlink Raiders side romped to a double-figures victory over Cardiff on Saturday night — but it took a while to break them down.
The game was open and fast-flowing from the start, with Raiders clearly out to open up a big lead from the start. They rained 32 shots down on Cardiff’s goalkeeper Mike Brabon, but Brabon’s outstanding shot-stopping kept the Raiders to just a single goal, man of the match Matt Vizzari scoring on the powerplay.
The hosts should have been five or six goals to the good by the break, but they weren’t, and Cardiff made them pay early in the second period with the equaliser.
Raiders came back strongly though and their pressure eventually broke Brabon and Cardiff down. Three goals in the space of just over a minute, killed the game off as a contest — Loris Taylor, Richard Facey and Alex Barker all on the score sheet — and a fourth from Facey just 35 seconds from the buzzer put them well ahead.
Brabon’s resolve was gone in the third period and he conceded three Raiders goals in just seven shots in the third period, and was replaced by Luke Takel.
Facey completed his hat-trick at 42.11, before Steven Osman and Vizzari added to the tally.
After Cardiff netted a consolation, captain Damon Larter made it 9-2, before a powerplay goal just six seconds from time, by Corey Watkins, brought Raiders to double figures.
Chelmsford Chieftains 3, Wightlink Raiders 0
Once again Wightlink Raiders travelled to Chelmsford, this time a winner-takes-all match in the South East Trophy, and once again they came away empty handed.
Three powerplay goals sealed the win for the hosts, the first coming 15 minutes into the game, and the other two coming within the space of two third-period minutes.
The win put Chelmsford at the top of the South East Trophy group, with Raiders finishing second.
This weekend Raiders have a double header against Milton Keynes Thunder, hosting them at Ryde Arena tomorrow (Saturday), face off 6pm, before going away on Sunday.
