ICE HOCKEYWightlink Raiders 2, Invicta Dynamos 5

RAIDERS dug deep but were unable to stop Dynamos from taking the two points and winning the English National League Division 1 title on Saturday.

In a hotly-anticipated match, the opening exchanges did not disappoint, with fast end-to-end action. Invicta got first blood, on the powerplay, towards the end of the first period and, after Raiders had a goal washed out early in the second, they counter-attacked to double their advantage.

Raiders kept in the game when, 90 seconds into the third period, Jeremy Cornish scored from Andrew Robinson’s assist.

However, another two Dynamos goals made it 4-1 and, although Cornish netted again, this time from Danny Hughes’s assist, it was a mere consolation as Invicta scored their fifth and sealed the win.

Streatham Redskins 3, Wightlink Raiders 4

Fresh from a tough match the night before, Raiders rallied in a close match away to Streatham on Sunday.

Man of the match Stewart Tait, and a goal from James Udell, kept Raiders in the match as the sides went into the second period locked at 2-2.

The game remained tight throughout, with Hughes adding a third goal before the Raiders scored a fourth to seal victory.

Tomorrow (Saturday), the Raiders face Chelmsford Chieftains at Ryde Arena.

Face off is at 6pm and cheering them on will be this year’s Wightlink Islanders speedway team.
