Romford Raiders 4, Wightlink Raiders 2

WIGHTLINK Raiders did just enough on Sunday to progress to the final of the South East Trophy — but Romford almost scuppered their plans.

In order to make the final, against Chelmsford in January, Wightlink were not bothered about the result, as long as they did not lose by more than three goals, or Romford would have taken their place.

It did not start well when Romford went ahead in the opening minute but Wightlink levelled affairs when Jiri Hanzal scored at 10.40, from man of the match Nick Compton, and Craig Tribe.

Yardley restored the hosts’ lead early in the second period, and they held that 2-1 advantage until there were just ten minutes left in the game.

Player-coach Jeremy Cornish scored at 50.48 from Robbie Brown and Richard Facey, although Romford cancelled his effort out almost immediately when Huska scored six seconds later.

Danny Marshall made it 4-2 with eight minutes left on the clock, but Wightlink did enough to keep the score this way, and book their final spot.

Tomorrow (Saturday), Wightlink host Cardiff ENL Devils. Face off is at 6pm.
