Wightlink Raiders 9, Streatham Redskins 5
WIGHTLINK Raiders had just one game last weekend, and enjoyed a good home victory over Streatham in the NIHL Cup.
Although Raiders cannot progress through the group stages of this competition, the game was full of goals and action.
They took the lead through Richard Facey in 3.11, and although Streatham replied quickly, Raiders responded in kind when Nathan Taylor netted on the powerplay from Corey Watkins’s assist.
Former Raider Dom Hopkins made it 2-2 on the powerplay but again, Raiders nudged ahead through Craig Tribe.
At 15.09, Streatham were awarded a rare penalty shot but they missed their chance to make it 3-3. Instead, Raiders pulled ahead to make it 4-2, when Jiri Hanzal netted.
The second period was all Raiders, with four unanswered goals from Tribe, Watkins, Hanzal while shorthanded, and Kieran Annis.
Raiders then made it 9-2 earlier in the final session when Sam Waller netted on the powerplay.
Though Streatham pulled back three goals in the final period, Raiders had the result in the bag.
Man of the match was Aidan Doughty.
Tomorrow (Saturday), Raiders host their namesakes, Romford, in another crunch league match at Ryde Arena, face off 6pm. On Sunday, they travel back to Streatham for another cup game.
