THE NatWest Island Games was given a royal seal of approval with a visit from Prince Edward.

His Royal Highness watched volleyball and athletics at the Fairway Sports Centre, Sandown, as part of his two-day visit to the Isle of Wight.

The prince greeted competitors and organisers of the event, before taking in the heats of the women's 200m down by the track.

Isle of Wight sports co-ordinator, Ray Scovell, said: "He was very knowledgeable about athletics and showed a real interest in what was going on.

"He said he was impressed with the setting for the events and commented it was nice to see so many people supporting the games."
