ISLANDERS REUNITEDFrom Mary Penn, Ryde:
I OFTEN wonder if anyone remembers Shanklin Regatta pre war? They were such fun.
I particularly remember the finale, which was the burning of the galleon, San Mateo, and purported to be lost in the Battle of Chinkling Bay.
This galleon was constructed over many days by the boy scouts. Names remembered are Gay, O’Leary and Lavender.
It would be of great help to hear of someone who remembers this, too.
