Floating bridge exhibition marks 150th anniversary

ISLANDERS REUNITEDFrom Sarah Burdett, chair, East Cowes Heritage Centre, 8 Clarence Road, East Cowes PO32 6EP, e-mail: eastcowesheritagecentre@onwight.net:

THE 150th anniversary of the floating bridge occurs on November 24.

To celebrate, East Cowes Heritage is staging an exhibition at East Cowes Town Hall on November 21 between 11am and 5pm. There will be a cake-cutting ceremony at 2.30pm and an illustrated talk at 3pm.

All will be very welcome but we especially would like to hear from any past crew members or others with special memories of the floating bridge. The exhibition will transfer to East Cowes Heritage Centre until February 2010 (the centre is closed in January).

The photo shows the launch of No 4 bridge from Medina Yard on March 22, 1966, after new batteries had been fitted at a cost of £2,250.
