ISLANDERS REUNITEDFrom Philip Cave, Newport. Phone 01983 523529. E-mail: philipcave@clara.co.uk

My great uncle (my grandmother’s brother) Clement Villar served in the First World War in the 8th Bn, Hampshire Regiment, which the IW Rifles were attached too.

I know he fought in the Dardanelles and was wounded twice before coming home with anomic fever.

When better, he rejoined his regiment and was posted to Palistine. He worked his way up the ranks, becoming company sergeant major, then lieutenant and finally captain.

His family lived at number 11 Hearn Street, Newport, and he was a member of St Thomas’s choir and Newport Cricket Club.

He was killed on September 19, 1918 and is buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, which is now in Israel, in a commonwealth war grave.

Although I have quite a lot of information about him, I do not have a photo. If anyone has a picture or can identify him on any of the pictures that exist of the IW Rifles, I should be very grateful.
