The Pop Idol voice coaches picked Will Young as the likely winner of the nationwide talent search as soon as they met him, it was revealed this week.

Carrie and David Grant, from Southgate, who train the likes of S Club 7 and Atomic Kitten, were drafted into the television event of the year at the semi-final stage to help prepare the youngsters for their performances.

Carrie said: "When David and I first saw Will, we said on the show we may have seen the Pop Idol the minute he opened his mouth and sung 'Light my Fire'. His voice has really improved, just from working with him. He just really raised his game. He listens to what we say."

Having said that, once Will was down to the last two even Carrie thought he might be swept away on a tide of pro-Gareth Gates euphoria.

"I was really, really shocked that Will won," she said. "I was thinking Gareth would win. I think we just assumed that he was ahead. I think Gareth was dazed, but I'm so overjoyed for Will.

"The final was one of the most tense television moments ever. It was brilliant television and brilliant to be there."

But will Will's career falter like Hear'Say's once the hype has worn away?

"I think it depends on the music Will does," said Carrie. "If he is true to his voice and what he is, he'll have a massive, massive career. I have absolutely no doubt about that. I think the public recognises that he's a huge talent. I think that's why he won."

The Grants have continued coaching a select group from the final, including Will, Gareth, Darius and Zoe, for this Saturday's Pop Idol celebration television show 'Will Young Pop Idol' on ITV1 at 9pm.
