SELF professed loud mouth Martin Hallett from Chorleywood has been short-listed to become town crier for the ancient city of St Albans.

Mr Hallett, 41, of Avalon Close, will go into verbal battle against three other hopefuls for the honorary job at the Clock Tower in St Albans at high noon tomorrow (Saturday).

In addition to the obvious attributes of audibility and clear speech, the judges will be looking for a dignified, diplomatic and approachable person with bags of personality.

Mr Hallett, whose hobbies include morris dancing and folk music, said: 'I was attracted to the role of town crier because I am interested in the history and civic pride of the town.

'I want to make a name for myself and the city.'

Competing against Mr Hallett will be Mrs June Rowland, 46, from Harpenden, Mr Sandy Glover, 53, from St Albans, and Mr Anthony Peterson, 49, from Redbourn.

The winner will be chosen by a panel of judges which will include the chairman of the Loyal Company of Town Criers and the town crier for Bristol.
