Scarborough 2 Barnet 2 (aet)

Scarborough win 5-3 on penalties

FA Trophy fourth round replay

Penalty shootouts might be exciting for the fans but they can be heartache for the losing team as Barnet found out at the McCain Stadium on Tuesday.

After dominating much of the game, which ended 1-1 after normal time and 2-2 after extra time, it was ironic that spot kicks should decide this FA Trophy tie, after Barnet's Mark Gower's last-gasp penalty miss at Underhill on Saturday.

In the shoot-out, Scarborough, taking the first kick, were successful with all five attempts, but Stuart Niven, taking Barnet's second kick, was denied by a brilliant save from Andy Woods, who blocked a well-taken kick at the foot of the post.

Barnet, with Lee Gledhill and Lee Flynn back in the side, had started brightly and a shot on the turn after only 90 seconds by Ben Strevens hit a post.

Two minutes later, Frazer Toms curled in a wicked cross and Wayne Purser headed a neat goal.

Within five minutes Scarborough were level. Slack defending at a corner allowed Dene Shields to stroke the ball home from 12 yards.

The rest of the 90 minutes was Woods against Barnet. He saved well from Strevens and Greg Heald in the first half and his save from Toms early in the second was breathtaking.

In contrast, Barnet keeper Danny Naisbitt was rarely troubled and apart from a few scrambles, the Bees goal was never seriously threatened. Two minutes into stoppage time Gower thought he had got the winner, but Shaun Rennison made a brilliant goal-line clearance.

Rennison forced home Scarborough's second goal following a corner in the 107th minute but four minutes later Heald nodded a free kick down to Strevens, who gleefully thumped in the equaliser.

Strevens and Purser had been a handful all night but despite late pressure the Bees could not find a winner.

In the shootout, the Bees' Neil Midgley scored the first, Niven missed the second and Strevens knocked in the third.

Rob Sawyers, who had earlier hit a post, also scored but Scarborough scored their fifth penalty, knocking Barnet out of the trophy.

An exhausting game on a heavy pitch and justice was not seen to be done.
