Be positive about new tourist boss

LETTERS From D. Wilson, Newport:

As if to prove the point of Zoe Bowman’s letter (CP, 21-09-12) up pops Keith Newbery with impeccable timing.

Just as Ms Bowman correctly highlights the Island’s masochistic streak, so weighs in Keith with his flagellation stick in overdrive.

I refer to Mr Newbery’s rather odd column in which he mocked the positive initial contribution of the Island’s new tourism boss whose 'crime’ was to try to unite us all in positive affirmation of its strengths as a holiday destination.

How this contribution could be objectionable to Mr Newbery is beyond me.

Perhaps it was the sort of curmudgeonly prose one could only expect from Mr N. Here, after all, is a columnist who takes strange delight in his aspiration to be a grumpy old man and who seems unable to cope with the fact that the world has moved on since the 1960s and that there is more to life than Malc Lawrence’s hilarious quips and tea and scones at Havenstreet Cricket Club.

Mr Thornton should not be deflected by Keith’s mean-spirited column. I, for one, would rather live on an Island that has the confidence to look positively to the future rather than one that gazes impotently and forlornly back at bygone days.
