THEATRE-GOERS in Gravesham can look forward to £90,000 worth of improvements at the Woodville Halls during the next five years.

Gravesham Council has announced a five-year renovation plan which includes replacing bar furniture and theatre lighting and re-decorating.

The plan, which was approved last week at Gravesham Council's executive meeting, will also set out to improve bar and catering services by bringing them under council management.

It is hoped the renovations will attract an extra 10,000 visitors to the theatre every year at the moment there are 100,000 a year.

Head of leisure services Les Bevan said improvements to the 30-year-old theatre are much needed.

He said: "The Woodville Halls compares favourably with other provincial theatres but the building needs investment which is why we have prepared this five-year business plan.

"We are going to invest £18,000 in the theatre every year for the next five years.

"There are various things we need to do including renewing the bar seating, installing air-conditioning, improving the theatre lighting and decoration.

"Part of our strategy is also to make the bar and catering services in-house. Until now, the services have been provided by Caterleisure Ltd but we at the council think we can run a better service in-house."

Gravesham Art Council development officer Jan Martin goes to the Woodville Halls once a week to organise exhibitions and shows.

Mrs Martin said: "It is great the theatre is going to be improved because it is an important building in the town and is used for lots of shows, exhibitions and plays.

"We've got to look after it so it stays dignified and make sure it is re-decorated in such a way that it is welcoming for visitors."

She added: "This is definitely good news for Gravesham."
