How safe is Woodcock Hill? With over 400 homes going on the adjacent Fire Research Station and Furzehill School sites, there are more than enough for that area and especially for Melrose Avenue.

It is vital that the Conservative majority on Hertsmere Borough Council keeps Woodcock Hill in the Green Belt.

Unfortunately there is a further threat. Readers may recall a New Year letter from the Conservative leader of Hertfordshire County Council opposing the already planned sustainable development, which extends Stevenage by up to 5,000 homes.

Instead he argued that all of the additional 49,000 houses needed in Hertfordshire by 2016 could be squeezed inside the towns.

To achieve that, the unacceptable sites in the county's Urban Capacity Study would have to be built on. In Borehamwood they included the silly suggestions of the flower bed in front of Tesco, the village hall and the Brookside Boys Club.

In a sane world that shouldn't happen. Instead it is more likely to be sites already identified by developers inside towns. Where is that in Borehamwood? It is Woodcock Hill.

Shortly the county council will be going to public consultation on proposals for where the new housing should go. Please make your views known to the Conservative majority in no uncertain terms.

Councillor Brian York,

Borehamwood South,

Hertfordshire County Council.
