Blasting a hole in Eco Island dream

Friday, March 19, 2010

LETTERSFrom Ken Thomas, Shanklin:

RECENT events seem to prove our council's efforts to promote us as the Eco Island have no credence. Firstly we refuse to sign up to the fovernment's 10:10 Climate Change Initiative. We then refuse planning permission for any wind turbines and also fail to support the Vestas factory. So where does ECO come into that?

Those of us who have bought a low emission car, because we acknowledge there is a climate problem, have had our free parking concession withdrawn. As an OAP, the savings from the concessions from both government and council influenced my decision to buy one. As an Eco Island how can this be justified?

As residents, we are aware that the council has a large financial deficit to overcome, but this has been due to the waste of our money on such consultants as you reported last week and the exhorbitant wages paid to interim managers.

It is about time that our councillors realised that it is our money they are squandering. £80,000 for a Shanklin Town Square which will never be used is unbelievable. If they could stop being so party political and worked for the good of the Island we would all benefit  It is apparent from reading the County Press that there are many councillors who attend meetings and take no part in the proceedings. The party machine makes the decisions.
