Ryman League Premier Division

Hendon should have run up a cricket score in the second half, after taking a 2-0 half-time lead in their penultimate home league game of the season. Instead, the Greens became very lazy and threw away two points, allowing the Swans to snatch a well-deserved draw.

Magnificent work on the pitch by a gang of Hendon people, led by vice chaiman Andrew Landesberg, made the LOOT Stadium playable.

There was no lack of goalmouth action, with goalkeepers, Adrian Blake of Walton and Hendon's Andy Iga making two good saves in the opening 25 minutes.

The Walton defence was showing signs of collapsing and it was no surprise when the opening goal arrived after 29 minutes. Paul Whitmarsh, looking offside, , sent the ball into the path of Jon Daly, who had the simple task of putting the ball into an almost unguarded net, keeper Blake having moved to narrow the angle for Whitmarsh. A minute into stoppage time, Haule blocked an attempted clearance, skipped past a couple of defenders and shot low past Blake into the corner.

Walton came back into the game after 58 minutes. A Hendon defender slipped and fell on the ball, which certainly struck a green-and-white shirted arm. Though there was no attempt to touch the ball or to gain advantage, referee Mr P Crossley saw his assistant Mr Perry flag and immediately pointed to the penalty spot. Coates sent Iga the wrong way.

After 73 minutes, Walton substitute David Adekola got a flick on to a beautifully curled 30-yard free-kick from Coates, sending the ball into the corner of the net, without a single Hendon player moving.

Whitmarsh and Dominic Gentle missed chances to wrap up the game for Hendon.

'I told the players that their second half performance was unsatisfactory,' said furious manager Frank Murphy. 'We had the game won at half time but threw it away.'

HENDON: Iga, Warmington (Howard, 63), Clarke, Daly, Towler, Fitzgerald, Haule, Hyatt, Whitmarsh (Gentle, 78), Watson (Guentchev, 73), Kelly.
