Can’t spell it, so don’t sell it

LETTERS From Clive Couter, Ryde:

Does anyone else shudder at the abysmal spelling you see in shop windows etc nowadays (and while I’m at it, how people incorrectly abbreviate etcetera to ect but that’s for another day).

I saw this sign outside a cafe in Ryde — told them months ago about the misspelling but they obviously don’t care because they put the signs up again.

If they can’t even spell sandwich when they’re selling them, albeit for only £1.25, then perhaps they should try selling something they can spell.

The worst one I saw was in the window of Peacocks in Newport when it was about to go into receivership.

A printed sign, about three sentences long, had five spelling mistakes, the worst being "we do not except Peacocks gift tokens". I’d say they should use spell check but that’s not much good when you're using completely the wrong word in the first place.

Half the trouble is people spell it how they pronounce it and they can’t speak.

I dread to think what educated overseas visitors to UK or IW make of some English people’s difficulty with their own language.

As far as signs in shop windows go, how about having a name and shame month by sending pictures into the letters page? It may make a difference — or perhaps not.
