Contractors should work 24/7

LETTERS From Keith Priest, Medham Village, Cowes:

YOU will know that the contractors building the Aldi Store have been given permission to close the road at Cowes for eight weeks to install a short length of sewer, I now know why it will take them so long?

I went past at 5.45pm today and guess how many people were working? None!

How is it the IW Council allows them to cause so much disruption and not force them to work seven days a week, preferably 24 hours, but at least from, say, 6am to 10pm.

They can easily get enough staff with the unemployment level as it is on the Island. Surely someone has the powers to enforce this?

The contractors are just taking the mickey out of all of us who are having to put up with the cost of the extra miles and time wasted.

If nothing else, our MP should bring this up with the appropriate minister to change the law so contractors are forced to work 24/7.

Remember, the roads are supposed to be there for the motorists, bus companies etc, not for contractors who carry out their work at absolutely minimum cost to themselves regardless of the disruption they cause.
