A broken ankle suffered by an Enfield golfing fanatic while watching the English Open tournament, caused his death ten days later.

Hornsey Coroner's Court heard how Dudley Berndes, 66, of Uvedale Road in Enfield, died on June 17 after developing a blood clot in his lung caused by the injury.

Mr Berndes, a retired postman, fell down a slope near the 18th green and was taken to the Queen Elizabeth hospital in Hertfordshire where an x-ray diagnosed a broken ankle.

He was put in plaster and discharged with a follow-up visit to Enfield's Chase Farm Hospital.

A couple of days later Mr Berndes started to complain about the pain in the back of his leg and breathlessness. As he was rushed to hospital he lost consciousness, which he never regained.

The coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death.
