Garden needs its young friends, too

LETTERS From Helen Wood, Wroxall:

BEFORE the playground is moved from Ventnor Botanic Garden might I make a suggestion? I think free entry to the garden should be granted to adults accompanied by a child under 12 years old: this would soon bring back some of the life and energy and fun to what was a very popular site.

Mr Curtis says the gardens are, "a botanic garden, not a park" but he is missing a trick — perhaps the trick.

Children darting along the paths from carpark to playground and back scuff autumn leaves and pick up pine-cones and odd seed-cases; they squeal at lizards flickering into view and throw themselves onto the cool grass to recover their breath and enjoy an ice cream.

Accidentally, they are learning to love this wonderful place. When they are older, with luck, they will value and preserve it.

Ventnor Botanic Garden should be a botanic garden AND a park.
