Green bins make me see red

Friday, January 27, 2012

LETTERSFrom Ernest Lowe, Shanklin:

So now they’re here; the beautiful environment-enhancing wheelie bins, together with two sizes of smelly food caddies and fortnightly collections. Thank you IW Council for making the Island more green.

Cllr Edward Giles asserted that more than 60 per cent of people responding to the consultation approved and, later, that more than 90 per cent wanted improvements in waste collections. So no need for the CP to test public opinion then.

Anyway, it’s all about recycling isn’t it? Personally, I recycle newspapers, bottles, cardboard, cans, old clothes etc.

Now we put all recyclable stuff in ONE bin; this is put in trucks and sent to some mainland facility to be sorted into paper, plastic, steel cans, aluminium cans etc (how this is done is a bit of a mystery).

Trucks then return to the IW, presumably empty, kicking out fuel fumes in the process.

Readers (and councillors) might like to get onto Youtube and enter in Recycling is Bullsh*t. It’s American but it’s certainly an eye opener. Give up half an hour and watch this.
