RECENT editions of the County Press have featured articles on epilepsy — one covering the tragic death of a young man, plus a feature on the effect the condition has had on one of our county councillors.
As someone with epilepsy myself I’m all too aware of the devastating impact it can have on individuals and their families.
I developed the condition in 1984 at the age of 32 with no prior warning and no family history. I suffered several fits and went through a very difficult period.
However, fortunately my fits were brought under control relatively quickly, and I’ve had no problems for many years.
I’m one of the lucky ones. I agree with Geoff Lumley that support is inadequate, particularly immediately after a diagnosis.
However, I would like to let people know that there is a support group on the Island, which anyone with epilepsy is very welcome to attend. Thanks to the support of our friends in Headway IW, we are able to hold joint meetings on the first Saturday of every month at the Riverside Centre, at 10 am.
Anyone with epilepsy or their family members is welcome — they are very informal and friendly (and include lots of tea and cake).
