Firstly we would like to congratulate Julian Hills and the Times Group on last week's excellent account on the safety of Barnet's power tunnel (Will new power tunnel be safe?', February 21).

Barnet Council needs to be fully active in monitoring all aspects of this scheme, especially in view of the scale of the environmental impact on the area.

Primarily, it is absolutely vital that Barnet Council must obtain for its residents a detailed centimetre by centimetre map of the route and depth of the tunnel, sub-tunnels, ventilation and access points.

Only in that way will people know if their neighbours and the council have allowed the tunnel, high-voltage cables and electro-magnetic fields to pass next to their own homes, places of worship, schools and centres of work and entertainment.
